What is Compounding

Compounding is one of the oldest pharmacy traditions. It has been around since the origin of pharmacy. Like an old-fashioned pharmacy, a formulary pharmacy, or apothecary, makes things from scratch the modern way, with the latest technology and formulas.

Pharmaceutical compounding is the preparation of a unique pharmaceutical product by the mixing of one or more pharmaceutical grade powders or ingredients that results in a custom-tailored medication that is not commercially available.

Compounding has always played an important role in pharmacy. A compounding pharmacist works with a healthcare practitioner to design individualized custom medications that would otherwise not be available to a patient. For example, you may need a certain eye drop but are sensitive to a preservative used in the manufacturing process. Compounding allows a pharmacist to make the eye drop without the preservative.

Compounding is also useful for young children and the elderly who have difficulty swallowing commercially available products or who may need unique strengths. As Dean Jolley explains, "What might work for 90 percent of the population isn't going to work for the other 10 percent. We're here to provide patients with the medications suited to their needs."
